The poem below is very popular in the US, but unkown to most Brazilians. Perhaps because, translated, it results in an unrhymed text and loses all its charm.

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Era a noite antrior ao Natal, e por toda a casa

not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

nem uma criatura se mexia, nem mesmo um rato;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

As meias estavam cuidadosamente penduradas ao lado da lareira,

in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

com esperança de que São Nicolau chegasse em breve ;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds;

As crianças estavam todas aninhadas e aconchegadas em suas camas;

while visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

enquanto visões de ameixas açucaradas dançavam em suas cabeças;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,

mamãe com seu lenço e eu com minha toca.

had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap,

tínhamos acabado de preparar para uma longa soneca de inverno,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Voei para a janela como um relâmpago,

tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

De um golpe abri as venezianas e levantei o vidro

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,

A lua no seio da neve recém caída,

gave a lustre of midday to objects below,

When what to my wondering eyes should appear,

Quando para meus olhos maravilhados aparece

but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer,

with a little old driver so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Para o topo da varanda! Para cima da parede!

Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

Agora disparado! Disparado! Disparado todas vocês!

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

Como folhas que voam ao prenúncio de um furacão selvagem,

when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;

quando se deparam com um obstáculo, ascendem ao céu;

So up to the housetop their coursers they flew

Assim para o topo da casa seus corcéis voaram

with the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—

com o trenó cheio de brinquedos, e São Nicolau também

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

e então, num piscar de olhos, ouvi no telhado

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

O empinar e o bater de cada pequeno casco.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Quando puxei minha cabeça para dentro, e estava me virando

down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

Levava um pacote de brinquedos jogado nas costas

and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

e parecia um mendigo abrindo seu saco.

His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples—how merry!

Seus olhos - como brilhavam! sua covinhas, que alegres!

his cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

suas bochechas pareciam rosas, e seu nariz uma cereja!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

Sua pequena boca estava puxada para cima como um arco,

And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow;

E a barba do seu queixo era branca como a neve;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

Segurava firme entre os dentes a piteira de um cachimbo,

end the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath;

e a fumaça circundava sua cabeça como uma coroa;

He had a broad face and a little round belly

Ele tinha um rosto largo e uma barriguinha redonda

that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

que chacoalhava quando ele ria, como uma tigela cheia de geléia.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

Ele era gordinho e rechonchudo, um elfo velho e bem alegre,

and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head

soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

encheu todas as meias; e se virou bruscamente,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

E colocando seu dedo ao lado do nariz

and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

e balançando, a cabeça chaminé acima ele subiu

he sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

pulou para seu trenó, assoviou para sua junta,

and away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

e voaram para longe como as sementes de uma dente-de-leão.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—

mas eu o ouvi exclamar, antes de desaparecer

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
