precedidos do artigo definido the.

O artigo the NÃO deverá ser empregado antes de nomes próprios de pessoas, ruas, cidades, vilas, países, continentes e montanhas*.

I live in New York City.

France is a small country

Brazil is in South America.

Mount Fuji is in Japan.

Africa is the third largest continent

in the world.

*devemos no entanto utilizar o artigo the quando nos referirmos a acidentes

geográficos ou cadeia de montanhas.

O artigo definido the DEVERÁ ser empregado antes de nomes de ruas, cidades, vilas, países quando forem utilizados como adjetivos de outros substantivos.

- Quando o nome do país for composto pela a palavra “United”.

The United States of America.

The United Arab Emirates.

- Quando o nome do país for composto pela a palavra “Kingdom”.

The United Kingdom.

- Quando o nome do país for composto pela a palavra “Republic”.

The People’s Republic of China.

- Quando o nome do país ou arquipélago estiver no PLURAL.

Pontos Cardeais - North / South / East / West

O artigo definido the DEVERÁ ser empregado antes dos PONTOS CARDEAIS sempre que forem precedidos por uma preposição ou designarem uma região específica*.

The weather is usually very hot in

the North, however it is pretty cool

in the South.

The beaches in the Northeast are

the most beautiful.

If you look to the West in the

afternoon you will see a beautiful

sunset.
